Cloudy Bay
Close your eyes and summon the spirit of New Zealand. What do you see? Beyond the Tolkien-esque landscapes, turquoise bays and ever-present, ever-wild call of adventure, a cold glass of Sauvignon Blanc probably makes an appearance. But why does this varietal go hand in hand with the ‘Land of the Long White Cloud?’ Winemakers Cloudy Bay spill on a SB’s perfect pairing…
“Great wine should be as easy to enjoy as it is complex to craft,” says wine producer David Hohnen, founder of Cloudy Bay, who has been making internationally acclaimed wines from their Marlborough-reared vines since 1985.
Legend tells it that the moment a drop of the region’s very own SB passed David’s lips, he was spellbound by its intensity and flavour – and driven by a desire to share it with the world. Cloudy Bay was born, and is now recognised worldwide for its signature Sauvignon Blanc. Alive with zesty citrus and lime notes – along with the Southern Hemisphere’s ability to create stone fruit notes of nectarine, passionfruit and guava – Cloudy Bay has become a winelist favourite, pairing those sophisticated fruit flavours with a distinctive flinty minerality.
Not only is its flavour synonymous with the stony and sandy terroir of Aotearoa (the Maori word meaning ‘The Land of the Long White Cloud’), but the respectful methods of production are tightly knitted to the preservation of New Zealand’s natural environment too. From planting their vineyards with indigenous vegetation to improve ecosystems, to using 100% of their grape waste and working towards 100% renewable energy by 2025, their eco visions are vast, impressive and well in motion.
And as ‘good’ goes, this summer we’ve got just the thing.
Down on the sea wall here at Watergate Bay, Zacry’s has teamed up with Cloudy Bay for a summertime partnership capturing the essence of the season.
Matching Zacry’s relaxed elegance and strong sense of place to New Zealand’s sunny spirit, our chef team has handpicked four landmark Cloudy Bay wines, pairing each with selected dishes from Zacry’s new Summer Seafood lunch menu. All are designed to be enjoyed with the sun’s rays, a sense of calm, and a bite of something special.
Savour crab brioche elevated by Cloudy Bay Pelorus Brut (a definitive New Zealand sparkling wine); grilled squid and red pepper romesco enhanced by delicate Pelorus Rosé; and apricot and almond tarte complemented by the complex barrel-aged notes of Marlborough Te Koko
Packed a beach picnic but still want to get in on the Cloudy Bay x Zacry’s action? After lunch service wraps at 2.30pm, Zacry’s invites guests to linger longer with its new oyster bar. Cloudy Bay’s signature Sauvignon Blanc paired with a freshly shucked delicate oyster is what a summer’s afternoon was made for.
Dip into our curated wines, sample the cocktail list, enjoy an aperitivo snack on the Zacry’s beach-view deck, joining up our lunch and evening between 2.30pm and 5pm – when dinner service begins.
